Elgin Community Network

July 28th, 2008

Remember when I told you I went to DNA’s Out to Lunch and might’ve happened upon a cool opportunity? Well that opportunity was the Elgin Community Network, and now I am on their board! I’ve been meaning to mention this for a couple months, but was too lazy to write up a description of the organization.

They have a website now, so I don’t have to write a description! Click here to visit the brand spanking new Elgin Community Network website and check out who we are, and what we do.

My main role right now is to find ways to promote safe bicycling in Elgin, and the first thing we’re doing is an Elgin Bike-to-Work Week August 2-8th. Click here for more details!

Here is a dorky photo of me showing off Wal-Green’s Elgin hoodie. Don’t you think Elgin could make a cooler-looking one?

Northbrook’s website hacked.

April 6th, 2008

For work I am currently visiting a lot of municipal websites. Today I visited Northbrook’s, and found it is hacked!

A news update link called “Site h4ck3d” is on the front page, and when you click it the following image appears:
site h4ck3d

I googled the phrase to try and figure out what it means. Most of the results were not in English, but a Wikipedia page came up. Apparently the SGAE is a group in Spain meant to protect authors and publishers–kind of a Spanish ASCAP. “El canon” is a tax they tried to put on anything that could support piracy–blank discs, computers, etc.

Now what does that have to do with Northbrook? “Por aqui” basically means around here, so I guess the hacker is saying something similar is coming? Or perhaps the “por aqui” is referring to the middle finger shown in the image? I don’t know. Very odd. Anyone who can better explain what their message is, or why on earth they chose Northbrook’s website to complain about a tax in Spain, please share!
